What is SAM® ?
SAM® stands for Speaker Active Matching, and it's a patented technology from Devialet.
The exclusive SAM® technology invented by Devialet allows your Devialet Expert system to precisely adapt the signal to the characteristics of your speaker model. SAM® processes the musical signal in real-time, ensuring that the sound pressure reproduced by the speakers matches exactly the one recorded by the microphone. It is processed through the powerful DSP implemented in each Devialet product. SAM® provides two main benefits:
- First, SAM® allows the speakers to reproduce lower frequencies and prevents any delay between the bass and the rest of the spectrum, avoiding the effect of phase rotation in the vicinity of the natural low-frequency cut-off of the loudspeaker. This restitution in the low frequencies allows us a wider soundstage anda more precise restitution - all while keeping the speakers’ personality.
- Secondly, SAM® provides great protection to your loudspeakers. Indeed, the maximum excursion of the speaker driver, and maximum continuous power handling of each speaker are set with SAM®. The speakers will not be able to go over this physical limit. As a result, SAM helps to prevent any damage that could occur when listening at high levels.
Devialet systems are the only ones able to perform this control, which helps you to rediscover your speakers.
To sum up: SAM® allows your Devialet Expert to precisely adapt the signal to the characteristics of your speaker model while completely protecting them. Allfor an audiophile listening with sharp ears.

SAM® and subwoofers
SAM® is only enabled on passive speakers (SAM® requires ADH® to work). We continuously work to improve SAM® capabilities and add new features.
During the SAM event, we are considering the initial profile as the first step to match the current market speakers. Adding a subwoofer will significantly expand the possible combinations between speakers and subwoofers. Additionally, once SAM is activated within your Expert or Expert Pro system, there is a possibility that your subwoofer may no longer be necessary, as your speakers will enhance their performance in low frequencies.
Which speakers are not compatible with SAM® ?
SAM® can only be enjoyed with a Devialet Expert system because it works in parallel with the Devialet ADH® technology. Both SAM® and the ADH® are Devialet patents.
Our objective is to make SAM® a universally accessible technology for all speaker models, ensuring that everyone can enjoy its benefits. However, electrostatic panels and electrostatic panels with an active crate are the only models for which we cannot create a SAM® profile. SAM® profiles cannot be applied to passive speakers, as they require a direct link between the amplifier and the speaker.

Questions & Answers
-
What are the differences between SAM V1 and SAM V2 ? What are the benefits of SAM V2 ?
There are no differences in the way engineers measure the speakers or develop the SAM® profiles; the quality and precision remain consistent in both versions. The theoretical functioning of SAM® remains unchanged between versions 1 and 2.
However, there has been theoretical work undertaken to incorporate the capability to control passive radiator speakers. The most significant distinction between SAM® V1 and V2, apart from the ability to measure passive radiator speakers, lies in the utilization at high volumes when the protective settings are activated. It now activates itself based on the signal sent to the speakers rather than the volume level. This feature is advantageous when listening to soft music with minimal bass content, such as classical music.
At present, all the speakers we have measured come with a SAM® V2 profile.
-
What does the logo V8 on the Configurator mean?
Certain speakers feature a V8 logo next to their profile on the configurator, indicating that only a SAM® V2 profile is available, and there is no SAM® V1 option. To utilize this profile, you must have firmware version 8.0 or a newer one installed on your Devialet device.
For all other speakers, if you are using firmware older than 8.0, SAM® V1 will be activated. However, if you have firmware version 8.0 or a more recent one installed, SAM® V2 will be activated instead.
-
Can I use another SAM® profile as the one of my speakers ?
It's crucial to emphasize that you should not use a SAM® profile with a different speaker model, as doing so can potentially harm your speakers.
SAM® operates on the fundamental principle of accurately replicating the behavior of a specific loudspeaker. This precision allows for increased excursion while ensuring the speakers are not pushed to the point of damage. To safeguard against such damage, protective measures are implemented to limit speaker excursion at exceptionally high volumes.
Consequently, if you apply an existing SAM® profile to a different speaker model, we cannot guarantee that the speaker will perform as intended or have the necessary protections in place. This misuse could lead to damage to your bass drivers or other components.

What is SAMlab? Will SAMlab pass near me ?
If you'd like to get more information on which speakers are already SAM® ready, please visit the following website HERE.
To obtain a SAM® profile, an in-depth study of the speakers is required. Our objective is to share SAM® technology with everyone and make as many speakers SAM®-ready as possible. We have achieved this by miniaturizing the SAM® laboratory into a portable device called the SAMlab. Thanks to this innovative tool, we can now measure approximately 10 speakers a day, a significant improvement compared to our previous rate of 10 speakers per week.
The SAMlab is exclusively designed for use with the Expert series and is directly connected to the back of the system, operated solely by a Devialet engineer. SAMlab events will be conducted in collaboration with our authorized dealers. These dealers will inform their customers about scheduled visits by Devialet engineers and the SAMlab.
However, if you're interested in obtaining a SAM® profile and want to expedite the process, you can contact our customer service. They maintain a list of customers seeking a SAM® profile, and to ensure an efficient data collection process, the following information will be required:
- Speaker brands and model (include the version if the model has several versions)
- Is the speaker passive? If the speaker is an active one, then SAM® measurements won't be possible
- Is the woofer's movement visible? We require full access to the driver's excursion movement for measurement purposes. If this visibility is not possible, we won't be able to create a SAM® profile.
- Where is the location of the speaker? (Country, City)
- Is it acceptable for you if we retain this information so that we can contact you when the opportunity arises for a visit or to inform you when the profile is ready?
We also offer a paid service that allows you to arrange for an engineer's visit at your location. Please feel free to contact our customer care for more details on this service.

When will my speakers have a SAM® profile ?
Profile creation must take place in front of the speaker, at least one of a pair, as the measurements are physically conducted with the speaker.
During a session, we perform two measurements: first, we assess the impedance capabilities of the speaker when combined with an Expert or Expert Pro system, and then we measure the excursion of the woofer.
This is the primary reason why it requires some time to create profiles for all the speakers. However, we maintain an efficient pace for profile creation. Follow THIS ARTICLE to get fresh news on speaker profiles newly built!

Can all Devialet products use SAM®?
SAM® is available for use with the Expert and Expert Pro systems. It's important to note that it cannot be used with a D Premier. If you happen to own a D Premier and are interested in experiencing SAM® capabilities, you can explore the option of a hardware upgrade to transition your product capacity to our next generation of hardware. This upgrade will enable you to use SAM® with your Expert Pro system.
Our Phantom I and Phantom II are also using the SAM® technology to extend their capability.
-
Does SAM® modify the sound of my speakers?
No, SAM® enables speakers to faithfully reproduce a broader range of musical content in the low frequencies while preserving the acoustic signature of the speakers. SAM® doesn't merely increase the bass volume; instead, it extends the audible sound spectrum in the bass frequencies.
SAM® empowers speakers to reproduce lower frequencies, thereby enabling us to fully appreciate the entire musical spectrum.
