Why set an additional router to strengthen your domestic wifi

Strengthen your wifi network can be really important when you have a Dialog. The dialog is the central piece of the entire system and must allows follow two rules:

  1. Be able to speak with Phantom (Cpl, ethernet, wifi)
  2. Be wired in ethernet to a router

But it is not always possible to wire all Phantom via ethernet to a router, or to have all Phantom and Dialog in the same room to forced a good PLC communication. It is even more difficult to plan a house modification in order to add ethernet wall plugs or electrical cables. The last solution is then to adapt your wifi network and this is very easy. Adapting your wifi network is also recommended when you start to add connected devices in your home.

What issues can I have if I don't strengthen my domestic wifi

If your network need to be strengthened to use Phantom, you will probably have the following issues:

  1. During Spark set up (if you purchased a dialog), you will have a screen "do you have a Dialog"
  2. During Spark set up or after, one or more Phantom will not be seen in spark/won't play music.
  3. In Spark after the set up, the application will ask you at some point to restart the entire set up.

How to strengthen a domestic wifi

The best way is to use one or more devices able to extend or create a network. Several brands have this sort of device. The most common is Apple airport (express or extreme).

  • If you want to extend your wifi network with an airport:
    1. Wire the airport to your electricity
    2. Open Airport utility
    3. During the airport set up select "extend/join a network"
    4. When the set up is done you will have a "copy" of your main router. The airport can connect in wifi to your main router and thus be placed anywhere in the house.
    5. You can use this option to move your dialog in another room and wire it in ethernet to the airport. This can be done if you need to move the Dialog in the same room as the Phantom. Screen_Shot_2018-04-04_at_15.24.38.png
  • If you want to create a wifi network with an airport:
    1. Wire the airport to your electricity
    2. Open Airport utility
    3. During the airport set up select "more option" and "create a network"
    4. You can then name the network, give it a password and finish the set up. NB: if you want to be able to do searches on the internet with this network, the airport must then be wire in ethernet to your main router.
    5. With this option the dialog can be wired to your airport in ethernet instead of to your main router. This way you bypass the limitations of your main router and your Dialog won't be blocked anymore. NB: in order to use Phantom your phone/computer must be connected on the airport's network. Screen_Shot_2018-04-04_at_15.27.50.png

Questions & Answers

  • Must I use only Apple Airport ?

You can use a similar device from another brand. The Apple one is the one our clients use most of the time, as well as our teams. It is a  device that we can help you with if you need some explanations.

  • Dialog an all Phantom are in the same room. They communicate in PLC but the sound cuts sometimes.

If the electrical signal fluctuates too much, it will be damaged. It is thus advised to not use too many powerplugs wired one on top of another. It is better to select one extended powerstripe with several inputs, enough to wire everything rather then multiple small ones.

Surge protections and LED devices (Philips Hue) can also change the electrical signal and impacts the PLC component of Dialog/Phantom.

  • I have a very good wifi signal, but Dialog does not see one or more Phantom because they are far. However my Phone can connect to the wifi very easily.

When dialog speaks with Phantom, your wifi network is never used. A wifi communication between Dialog and Phantom means that we are using Dialog's own wifi component (not your router).  That is why the Phantom must be close enough to be able to detect and attach to the Dialog's wifi signal.

When there is a Dialog, Phantom never connects directly to your rouer in wifi.

  • Can I strengthen my network with 2 Dialog ?

It is not possible to have 2 Dialogs on one same wifi network.

A workaround is to create several wifi networks with airports. If several wifi networks exist, there can be as many Phantom + Dialog system as networks. But with this option it will not be possible to have the same music on all the systems at onces, because your phone/computer can't be connected to 2 wifi network at the same time.
