1. What are the connectivity available on Phantom and its accessories line?
Phantom and Dialog have each a Optical input. This input is available on the back side of the Phantom and on the back side of the Dialog.
With this input you can connect a lot of devices such as
Majority of material which are delivering sound have this output.
Quality of the Optical cable is very important to avoid crackling sound when you are playing, and also if you can avoid too much long optical cable, this will benefit the sound quality your Phantom will recieved. However we do not have specific brand recommandation, a simple search on the web will show you all possible cable available in the market.
The other name of this type of cable is Toslink.
If you are external device have no optical output, you can still use a convertor, again a lot of options are available in the market.
There is also on Phantom on it's back side an Ethernet Entry, which is mainly use if you want to wire it to your network via an ethernet cable
2. How to activate the Optical into Spark?
If you wired one of your device to the Phantom system via the optical, the next step is then to activate into Spark. To perform this activation, please follow the steps below:
- Open Spark
- Go into
- the mobile version of Spark and select "Options"
- the Desktop version of Spark and select "Settings" on the left down side of the apps
- Select "Devices"
- Select the Device you have wired to your external material (TV, DVD, Blu-ray etc....)
- Switch on the toggle button aside "Optical - Phantom" or "Optical Dialog" depending on which material is hooked.
- Activate the option "Autoswitch" if you want this entry to automatic play once recieving a signal (ex. when you are switching on your TV)
- the following option allow you to select the type of material you have wired into your system.
Note: if you have 2 seperate rooms setup into your Phantom system, we strongly recommand you to connect your TV into one of the Phantom positionned aside your TV and not the Dialog. We recommand this so everytime you are looking to watch your TV, the sound will be play into the right Room of your Phantom system.
3. Some more information I need to know?
If you are wiring a TV to your system, it's important to notice this below information:
- Almost all TVs are automatically playing into Dolby, or any licenced format when they can, we decided on our side, that this licenced format are not decently delivering a great sound quality, therefore Phantom system is not comptatible with Dolby, DTS, DOlby surround, Dolby Atmos. So if you are not changing the TV paremeters you might get some time no sound into your Phantom, to ensure that all the time you Phantom can play your TV sound, switch into your TV settings, the sounds output in PCM which is the standard format in the market. To find out how to perform this change on your TV, please consult your manufacturer product documentation
- Also it could be better in terms of sound delivery, to only push sound into your optical entry, rather than combine sound from your TV and Phantom sound at the same time. Almost all TV can get this setting on, again please consult your TV manufacturer product documentation (option could be name ouput sound into external speaker).
- Finally TVs are playing sound in a low volume when playing sound into the optical output. If you are playing TV sound into your Phantom but not hearing the sound too much, play with the volume into Spark to increase the sound delivery on your Phantom system.
- If no sound is still resulting after all this change, it's recommend to try with another optical cable, as this cable are very sensitive (one easy test to do, is to unwire a side of the cable and check if there is a red light inside the cable when the output is transporting sound into the cable, if there is no red light, you can consider that the cable is damaged, or the source is not properly delivering sound).
In a regular basis, we recommend our customer to consider their TV as the central point of signal, rather than muliplying the videos device connections. For example if you have a Blu-ray, a DVD and a TV side your Phantom, rather than connect each device to one of your Phantom system component, just wired your TV to a Phantom. This way everytime you want to enjoy a DVD, a Bluray or even just watching TV, your TV will centralize the sound signal and distribut it to your Phantom system.
3. Questions and answers?
When I play my TV sound with my Phantom system, I've got a delay between image and sound - How can I remedy it?
This is what it's called Lipsync
The connection between a TV and our Phantom system may result in a constant latency, up to 160ms (the exact latency value will depend on the signal treatment of the specific TV or other optical equipment used). Several solutions exist to compensate this lag. For instance, most televisions allow you to adjust audio and video synchronisation (often called A/V sync or Lip sync)
For an audio/video use, it is up to the user to synchronize the image and sound. In order to do so, several solutions exist :
- From a TV using an HDMI signal or from a tuner. Simply adjust the latency on the TV to 160ms, or less (some test with different value should be done to ensure the right latency to set).
- From a TV using an HDMI signal from a router (if it has an optical output). Use the optical output of the router (which can be set in advance with respect to the video) and possibly also adjust the latency on the TV.
- From a computer. A player like VLC adjusts precisely latency audio and video streams separately.
- From a DVD deck or Blu-Ray. Some models (such as OPPO-103 for instance) are able to handle the audio / video latency at a rate of +/- 200 ms, that is to say in the range of what we have to correct.
I'd like to set two different materials into one single Phantom input, is this possible?
There are solution in the market which centralize multiple optical input into a single one.
Note: We recommend the Lindy's products which are the product we are using in our specific setup with Phantom.
Here are some possible audio switch
Sometime when playing via optical to my Phantom, I have some crackling sound, how can I avoid it?
Several information should be known here.
- Length of your optical cable may affect the sound delivery into your Phantom system (this is the case for all audio system).
- Quality of the cable have also a negative effect into the sound delivery, select your cable if you can with help of any audio expert by visiting our store or our partners.
- Please use as much as you can a Phantom input for the optical rather than the Dialog optical which is more sensitive. The Dialog optical could echo more some environnement sound, and the quality deliver could be affected by it.
- On test possible to identify a cable issue, is to unuwire a side of it, and check if a red light is visible inside the cable when transporting a sound - if there is no red light, the cable is probably damaged or the connection is not properly set from the other side of the cable.
I'd like to avoid any cable between my TV and my Phantom system.
Of course additional options are available such as Airplay and bluetooth to connect your TV for example. Follow your TV manufacturer instruction to connect your system to the Phantom system.
Of course our recommendation, would be to use a cable between TV and Phantom as this is the steadiest transporting way for audio.
I have a sonos connect - how can I onboard this source into my Phantom System?
Sonos Connect have an optical output, therfore if you want to onboard it into your Phantom system, you can follow instruction above and activate the source into Spark as show into the above videos. Then to pilot the tracks you want to play you will need to use the Sonos application, and ensure that the autoswitch is activate into Spark for the input use.
Note: You may faced some latencies between both system when playing them at the same time into Phantom and some Sonos speaker.
I have an Apple TV, if I use airplay to connect it Phantom, will I have a lip sync issue ?
The lip sync delay only appears if you connect a device in optical to Phantom/Dialog. If you connect your Apple TV in airplay to Phantom, there will be no delay.
How can I connect a turntable ?
Phantom only has an optical input. Therefor you can only add a turntable if it has an optical output (project digital 3 for exemple).
Alternatively, you can also use an analog to optical converter, but as per our feedbacks, this does not meet the Phantom sound quality standards.
How do I connect an Apple TV to Phantom/Dialog ?
You have a Phantom or Dialog airplay ready: turn on the Apple TV, go to settings, and then speakers/audio. There you will see the name of the room you associated Phantom with. Select this room as speaker. Now the sounds is played by Phantom.
Note that every time you quit an Apple TV app, you may need to select the room again in the settings to play on Phantom. This is an airplay limitation.
You do not have an airplay ready: Phantom/Dialog: you can still connect the apple TV to your Phantom or Dialog with an optical cable.
