Quentin Sannié | Core Infinity Software

Dear friends,

I know you’ve been patiently awaiting the arrival of our Core Infinity software update for some time now. We had initially slated it for release today, and I regret to inform you that we are not yet able to roll out the current version. Unfortunately, it remains incomplete and fails to meet our stringent quality and safety controls. I am only too aware of the disappointment this additional delay will cause you.

That’s why I want to be perfectly open with you and provide you with a detailed update on our software progress.

Devialet OS is based on an audio Linux kernel that enables your Expert Pro to receive regular updates, providing you with various services and features. Our new hardware support and the system foundations have been fully tested and approved. However, the update mechanism has revealed certain weaknesses that we are in the process of correcting. This is vital to our product integrity, and we are now in the final stages of performing checks.

Sadly the other features we initially announced need more validation.

First and foremost, Devialet AIR, designed to stream your content in bit-perfect quality. Tailoring it to Core Infinity has required more adjustments than we first thought. We are still encountering issues with 192kHz HD files. Over the next few weeks, we should have a fully operational version of AIR 3 for Core Infinity via both Ethernet and WiFi.

The Roon team are working hard to make the necessary improvements to Expert Pro | Roon integration. We feel confident they will meet the same time frame.

As for Spotify Connect, we now have a functional first version, though there are still a few bugs to correct, including volume management. During trials, we met further complications, such as the need to limit volume control to -12dB from the Spotify app so as to protect both your ears and your systems. Once the next phase of development is complete, we will need to be fully Spotify-Connect.

AirPlay: I have been using AirPlay at home all weekend and with significant stability. Here again, there are a few minor volume issues to resolve prior to becoming Apple-certified.

UPnP: We are only few days from releasing UPnP internally. It will then move forward for final testing and approval.

Last but not least, automatic source-to-source switching continues to generate occasional software crashes. Our engineers are working tirelessly to correct them, one by one.

Software development is always a complex and lengthy process and often leads to overly-protracted delays in release dates. I can only imagine your frustration and hope you’ll trust me when I say that we’re doing everything in our power to provide you with software that meets your expectations as quickly as possible.

Here’s a quick recap of our roadmap:

  • By tomorrow, November 8, we will deliver a 2.2 Alpha version to our dealers and retailers so they can test it and let you request a demo should you so wish. This version features AIR, Spotify Connect and AirPlay. It is not yet sufficiently stable to be made publicly available.
  • On November 16, Core Infinity will be presented to the press, along with AIR, Spotify Connect, AirPlay and UPnP. Once again, this version will not be made public.
  • By the week commencing November 20, two versions will be made available. They will still be in Beta, without critical bugs but with a few residual bugs.
    • 2.1 Release Candidate, with AIR 3 and UPnP
    • 2.2 Beta, with AIR, Spotify Connect, AirPlay and UPnP.
  • We aim to release the official 2.2 Version by mid-December.
  • For regular progress updates on Core Infinity, you can follow our logbook here and share your thoughts with us.
  • Please be aware that we consistently take into account your comments and suggestions shared across different channels. More new features will follow all throughout 2018.

We will begin installing your Core Infinity boards as a priority over the coming days and continue through to late December. You will then be able to choose from the 2.1 Release Candidate and 2.2 Beta versions or wait for our stable release. It goes without saying that any physical outputs of your Expert Pro system will remain active.

You were among our earliest and strongest supporters and I know how much we owe you. We are doing our utmost to regain your trust. I shall make sure of it personally.

Warm regards,

Quentin Sannié
Devialet CEO

Whilst I welcome this long overdue update on the CI Board, I am afraid that it falls short of answering one of the major points raised by many Expert pro owners - will it be ROON RAAT compliant? I note that you are continuing with AIR3, but given the past abysmal record with previous versions of AIR, this does not fill me, personally, with any confidence or joy! Why is there a seeming lack of will, on the part of Devialet, to become ROON compliant (RAAT that is, rather than the halfway house of the existing Roon/AIR protocol). Sorry if this sounds less than enthusiastic, but I am rather sick and tired of Devialet's lack of  meaningful communication with its Customers, who have spent a lot of hard earned cash buying their product. At present I personally can not see anything in the new Board of interest to me!

I am really curious and excited about the core infinity board! sad to hear this but as software developer i understand it. Please integrate Roon RAAT! This is a must have feature. I appreciate the roadmap. Very honest. Any coments on when to expect the Roon integration that is mentioned? Ad what kind of integration will it be?

Dear Quentin, glad to finally receive an update after being kept in the dark for quite some time. As you realize it's really difficult when promises are not kept. I very much appreciate your open words and hopefully this continues that, as you mentioned we as the earliest and strongest supporter of Devialet (acting as brand ambassadors within the HiFI world and among various communities), get a real picture of what is happening at Devialet.
From hundreds of comments over the last few years I am sure you are aware of the major problems many are still facing with AIR, so Roon RAAT compatibility to for so many not just a "feature" rather than an essential part to finally enjoy their music without any problems. Many also invested their budget last year into the Pro upgrade and streamer-board / Devialet OS to enjoy the proclaimed "big evolution".
Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2.0 are nice add-ons but bit-perfect (again via Roon RAAT) or room correction as mentioned in online forum etc. are top priorities for most.
I know there is a lot happening within Devialet (Phantom, car-hifi / loudspeaker partnerships, store expansion etc.) but it's essential for your "core customers" that their hardware & software is working as expected / promised and they are innovative and up-to-date on the market.
Please try to find a setup for your internal resources to fix the backlog of features / bugs and as well meet the requirements of customers (RAAT, room correction etc.)
Trust is a valuable asset and we all share the same goals - so good to see you are personally engaged again.

I'm confused... you state "We will begin installing your Core Infinity boards as a priority over the coming days and continue through to late December." right after you speak of ongoing problems with the software platform that runs on it.  Why would I want to update to the Core Infinity board if the software platform is not yet working?   What am I missing?    Are there benefits to installing the Core Infinity board before the new OS software is solid?  Is there a downside?  Personally, I'm not interested in installing beta software and dealing with whatever headaches may ensue.

Thanks for the communication, Quentin. I'll add my voice to those above who stress the importance of Roon RAAT and room correction. These are by far the most important features for me.

Again, many thanks for the communication Quentin. I would also like to put my name against the importance of integrating Roon RAAT. This (and probably room correction) would make the Devialet amps 'complete'.

Hoping this will be taken into consideration.

Dear Quentin, thank you for the update, though it means some more delays and thus waiting time. I just hope that the new Core Infinity will be the flexible, infinitely upgradable system that was already promised to us Expert owners with the original Evo. Keep up the magnificent audio/all-in-one work. Looking forward for all the good news in the next weeks / month.

    Dear Quentin

Thank you for the update.  I would also like to put my name against the importance of integrating Roon RAAT and room correction.

However, please bear the following in mind.  We purchased devialet experts - which were premium products and paid a premium price for them.

These products were sold with essential features that were not functioning - AIR has never worked for most expert owners.

Despite many software updates - it was just not reliable to use.

We then were sold upgrades which included the core infinity board - these boards were pre-paid.

It is about 18 months since these upgrades were sold to us - unfortunately so far all we have seen are empty promises.

The integration of Air into Roon has really brought a lot of joy to expert users again and you need to be commended for that.

Please try to expedite completion of this board and include what most expert owners are asking for - Roon !!!!!

    Dear Quentin,

Thank you for your open words - I think this is the right kind of communication, even if you have to disclose the problems. I would like to join the previous posts:

    • I cannot imagine what sense it should make at the time to send my PRO to France - I don´t want my PRO with an Infinity board but without full functionality
    • ROON AIR was a big step forward, but it´s still not perfect, so ROON RAT is very important feature (although I can understand that Devialet does not want to give up AIR - not everyone wants to buy a ROON license)
    • Devialet should be the premium product it´s being promoted for. Spotify Connect/Apple AirPlay etc. are nice features, but nothing more than standard features, which you can find a long time ago in every low budget device. It should not be Devialet´s claim to leave it at that point. And I think it certainly isn´t the claim that the customers have at Devialet.

    Dear Quentin,

I too would like to add my thanks for your response.  I believe that a lack of clear communication has exacerbated some of the disquiet amongst customers, so it is good to see this addressed.

I would like to clarify the following comment:

The Roon team are working hard to make the necessary improvements to Expert Pro | Roon integration. We feel confident they will meet the same time frame.

To me it is unclear if this refers to the current 'Roon integrated AIR' that is already working and available with the current DUET board, or if this refers to proper 'Roon RAAT' protocol integration.  I am guessing that because you have not specifically mentioned RAAT, that this does indeed refer to 'Roon integrated AIR', maybe you could clarify?

As a second point, am I correct in interpreting that the actual hardware is fully tested with zero issues, and all of the testing, quality checks, safety checks and so on that you refer to are purely software related?  This is how I interpret your words, however, I am not 100% clear so would appreciate it if this could be clearly clarified.

    Many thanks.

    Dear Quentin,

Many thanks for your update.  Although disappointing, I understand that designing a new board is a significant undertaking which needs to be thoroughly tested.

I would like to add my vote for full Roon integration.  I am running Roon Core on a NAS; as Devialet AIR does not have a Linux version this meant running AIR on a separate PC or on a virtual machine, both of which had connectivity and drop-out issues.  Since the Roon AIR integration I have been able to enjoy my Devialet without problems.

    Many thanks,

    Graham

I hope your compulsory exercises are finished soon so you can start with things that really make a difference. E.g. room correction: Integration of Dirac - That would be one small step for Devialet, one giant leap for the audiophile community.

Hello, Quentin. I do consider myself a Dev die hard fan and still believe Devialet can make it this time , if Devialet will focus more on Expert line start from now. Two simple things, amongst others, Devialet can do to make us feel better - improve the stone-age APP (it is a simple task if there is enough resources put there) and more importantly, improve communication (it should be easy, right ? )

IMHO, I would say the most priority is not any feature but to finalize and fully test the function of “FW upgrade by user”. It must be error free in any circumstance!

When our Expert Pro finally installed the new Core Infinity, we will certainly upgrade the FW for new features again and again afterward, I don’t want my Expert Pro become brick while FW upgrade unstable like some mobile phone.

Besides, I’m using Roon installed on NAS and directly play music via AIR ethernet to Od’A, no any further computer needed. (Hope Graham read this and know it works!) To be fair I must admit that I’m very satisfy the SQ and the connection always work fine, it is already very convenience solution for me.

At lease Roon already build-in AIR and can work with Expert Pro now, RAAT just make it better. On the contrary, new features like Qobuz connect which is Expert Pro currently has no solution until the new Core Infinity programmed to support this new feature.

I don’t mind the initial installation of new Core Infinity leak of new features, stability is my most concern. It’s good to upgrade the hardware first and release new feature one by one afterward, just don’t let my Expert Pro become brick. The HW upgrade such as network port from 100Mb to 1000Mb is already good enhancement for me.

Hi Quentin, I got one of the first Devialets in the US and I am still very much happy with its sound quality. I am using the crossover function and need it to work as good as now (or even better) with the new board. If that would not the case with the first version of OS the board would make my 250Pro unusable for me.

I would like to have also some more ideas about the functionality of the new board (implementable in the near future or planned for further development). Especially what would the 2nd USB input and the  improved ethernet input allow e.g. direct connections to USB drives or NAS?

Dear Devialet I really hope that the Core Infinity board would support Roon RAAT. And Room correction would be a really nice bonus. But most important is to get FULL Roon support. And I really do hope you guys aren't putting in any resources or money in trying to develope something that competes with Roon on your own. Because that's a fight that is already lost from the beginning.

And you SHOULD definitely read this thread to fully understand what most of us wants from our Devialet Pro:s

    All the best

Adding my name to the long list of requests for confirmation that Roon RAAT is either imminent - or at least on the radar.

I'm in New Zealand.  Can I suggest that you focus on clear and accurate information to the local dealer networks around the globe?  I personally don't want to be sending my lovely slab of Devialet goodness to the other side of the planet unless I know that it will return with even more goodness.

    Dear Quentin,

Thanking you for providing the above update regarding current progress, and noted issues with the Core Infinity Software. Understand it's not easy for a Company to advise of delays, and noted issues, but it is refreshing for yourself / Devialet to be so open with what is happening, and the projected roadmap - Kudos for this.

Appreciate that there’s lots of priorities that Devialet are pursuing regarding current and future features of the OS, and one feature cannot take precedence. A 100% fully functioning board should be first priority, followed by Operating Software, then finally by features (proposed features only work, if the board works, and it's operating software is error free).

I myself have Roon lifetime membership, and from a personal perspective would appreciate if Roon RAAT (Ready) functionality were provided with the Core Infinity (be that current or future). Devialet support have indicated that they're currently keeping track of requests for Roon RAAT, via Devialet official channels (emails, chat, phone call, Facebook, Twitter).

I believe that Roon RAAT would be a very attractive feature that helps Devialet maintain it's leadership over current offerings by other Major Companies (the list of Hi-Fi manufacturers who now feature Roon keeps expanding all the time).

Would it be more efficient (and transparent) if a Poll were set-up here in the Core Infinity Log, where customers (be that current or potential) are able to advise of the features that they feel are expected or wished for with the Core Infinity. I understand that Devialet cannot run their business solely on the wishes of their customers, but it could provide valuable feedback for Devialet on the expectations for current / future needs.

The Poll can be limited to features currently proposed by Devialet for immediate implementation with the Core Infinity (e.g. UPnP, Spotify, Airplay, etc.), and also future features (e.g. Qobuz, Deezer, Tidal, Roon RAAT, Room Correction, Onboard / On-the-fly Configurator, etc.).

    Poll:

    • UPnP
    • Spotify
    • Airplay
    • Qobuz
    • Deezer
    • Tidal
    • Roon RAAT (yes please)
    • Room Correction
    • Onboard / On-the-fly Configurator
    • Other ........

I hope you would agree that a Poll would not only be more efficient for Devialet in providing beneficial information of customer’s expectation/requests, but would add to the valuable transparency currently being provided by yourself/Devialet within these Core Infinity updates.

Your continued support is most appreciated.

    Cheers
    John

PS Can you also update the remote app, as I don't believe it has ever been revised since it's inception and is severely lacking in features and functionality (if / when it actually works, which is very intermittent)

PPS - what feature does the 3 dots represent as indicated after the Web Radio symbol???

    Dear Devialet,

Let me elaborate my Roon RAAT feature wish a bit more. I have had numerous problems with AIR during the last couple of years, starting from August 2015. I have had hundreds of email messages with Devialet support, my dealer and Roon fellows about these different AIR problems. Absolutely nothing has solved these problems so far. Roon-AIR integration is the best streaming solution what you have been able to do so far and let me say thank you for that, but unfortunately it's not working good enough yet since there are still dropouts, crackles and sudden stops in streaming.

Then again, I have a Roon RAAT device on the same network and streaming to it has always worked perfectly fine.

This is the reason why I want the Core Infinity board supporting Roon RAAT - it just works.

Thank you for your communications.  Allow me to add my name to the many that wish you well, and success with the Core Infinity board and serious thought into Roon support. Roon has been the steward of my music collection for a number years now and I do not see the relationship ending anytime soon. Since Roon's Air integration, many continuous hours of musical enjoy has been consumed - I wish I could have said the same before their release.

    Thank you,

Hello. It is clear many users like to have Roon RAAT. I myself do not use Roon but hope Devialet can provide this for them. To me further improve sound quality is the most important. I think that was why you created the D premier in the first place. Expert pro lines can not bring your company much money but it is the your flagship, right?

What a load of BS this announcement is! Not least since it’s AFTER the well publicised release date yet hidden in the depths of this non-public area.

This situation would have been obvious months ago to any half decently run company.  How hard can it be to organise your software division to actually be able to release anything on time and working properly?

How hard would it be to actually listen to what your customers want as well?! There have been a huge number of requests for a RoonReady CI board - in these support pages, on the Devialetchat forums, on the Roon forums, and through your customer services. It’s disingenious to pretend otherwise.

The Expert systems were once the envy of many. Despite the latest hardware upgrades, which on the whole have been great, the brand has become one of ridicule and associated with flaky software, missed deadlines, marketing BS, and zero customer focus or communication.

Where’s the white paper on what the board is actually all about? Where are all the specs and planned features? Where’s Room Correction / Convolution? It’s 2017!! 2018 by the time you get it together! Where’s the information about why the whole unit has to be shipped back and not simply a dealer swap as was previously announced? What are you modifying on the Experts? Where have the firmware updates and new features been the last couple of years? Where’s an updated iOS app? Oh, sorry you were busy making a Sky soundbar!

All in all utterly disappointing and predictable. Ok, a message is perhaps better than none but barely. Its just too little too late.  And most importantly - we know it's insincere!

    • Reorganise your software division and hire more people so you can actually get things out on time and that work.
    • Start a proper open communication forum where you actively engage with your customers.
    • Actually listen to your customers!
    • Drop the BS

As a final note, who the hell would want to send their Experts in for an upgrade to a board that barely has alpha firmware and doesn't work yet!  Insane!!  Devialet - you are utterly mad!
